Ampère and Lorentz forces. Ferromagnets

The magnetic interaction of parallel currents, magnetic flux, the Ampère force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field, the Lorentz force on a moving charge, magnetic properties of matter, ferromagnets and the hysteresis loop.

Estimated time: 3 h 3 activities

Learning objective

Derive the force between parallel currents and explain the definition of the ampere.
Master the formulas for magnetic flux, the Ampère force and the torque on a current loop.
Analyse the motion of charged particles under the Lorentz force (circle, helix).
Explain the properties of dia-, para- and ferromagnets, hysteresis and the Curie point.

Expected outcomes

Can calculate the force between parallel currents and the Ampère force on a conductor, and find its direction with the left-hand rule.
Can find the magnetic flux and the work done in moving a conductor.
Can calculate the orbit radius, period and helix pitch of a particle in a magnetic field.
Can read the remanence and coercive force from a hysteresis loop and classify magnetic materials as soft or hard.
