Magneto-optics and electro-optics

The influence of external magnetic and electric fields on optical phenomena: the normal and anomalous Zeeman effect, the Faraday effect, the Stark effect, the Kerr and Pockels effects, birefringence in a magnetic field and the magneto-optical Kerr effect.

Estimated time: 2 h 10 min 5 activities

Learning objective

Study the classical and quantum explanations of the Zeeman effect and the polarization of its components.
Understand the Faraday effect and its non-reciprocity.
Study the Stark effect and the electro-optic effects (Kerr, Pockels).
Become familiar with the essence and applications of magnetic birefringence and the magneto-optical Kerr effect.

Expected outcomes

Calculates the normal Zeeman splitting in units of frequency, energy and wavelength.
Calculates the Faraday rotation angle and the parameters of an optical isolator.
Finds the half-wave voltage of a Kerr cell.
Distinguishes magneto-optical and electro-optical effects by field type, geometry and field dependence.
