The first law of thermodynamics

The first law of thermodynamics — the law of conservation of energy for thermal processes; work done by an ideal gas; work and heat in isochoric, isobaric, isothermal and adiabatic processes; the polytropic process.

Estimated time: 3 h 5 activities

Learning objective

State the first law of thermodynamics and know the sign convention.
Understand and calculate the work of a gas as an area on the $p$–$V$ diagram.
Learn to find $Q$, $A$ and $\Delta U$ in isoprocesses and the adiabatic process.
Know the polytropic process equation and its heat capacity.

Expected outcomes

Applies the first law to any ideal-gas process by writing the energy balance.
Calculates the isothermal work $A = \nu RT\ln(V_2/V_1)$ and the adiabatic work $A = (p_1V_1 - p_2V_2)/(\gamma - 1)$.
Finds the temperature and pressure in adiabatic compression using Poisson's equation.
Identifies the type of process and the sign of the heat capacity from the polytropic index $n$.
